Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship

The fellowship program in Pediatric Dermatology at Children's Memorial Hospital/Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (CMH/NUFSM) offers broad training in all clinical aspects of pediatric dermatology, as well as ample clinical and basic science research opportunity.  Fellows who wish to become board-eligible in pediatric dermatology are required to be board-eligible or board-certified in dermatology prior to the commencement of their training.  During their fellowship, they are exposed to clinical care in all relevant environments, including pediatric dermatology outpatient clinics, operating rooms (both local and general anesthesia), and consultation services in the hospital (including ward, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units), the emergency department and other general and subspecialty pediatric clinics.  Fellows are trained and supervised in the performance of bedside diagnostic studies, skin biopsies, surgical excisions and laser therapy.  They staff a continuity clinic, and get ongoing continuity in all clinics via a consistent assignment throughout each academic year.  They are involved in telephone inquiries from both patients and other physicians.

Supervised research experiences are a part of subspecialty pediatric dermatology training in the CMH/NUFSM program.  Fellows are encouraged to embark on research projects, which may include case series or retrospective reports, prospective trials, participation in clinical pharmaceutical trials, or basic science research (if the fellow is so inclined).  All divisional faculty are responsible for oversight of this process, and asked to participate as requested with the clinical fellows in their research or other scholarly endeavors.  Fellows in pediatric dermatology receive research support and guidance in the form of encouragement and participation of the divisional faculty.  Manuscript/presentation ideas are identified by either the fellow or attending physicians, and oversight of the preparation of presentations or manuscripts is directly supervised by the attending physicians.  Faculty in the division of pediatric dermatology prioritize fellows when considering junior authorship of invited chapters or manuscripts.
