The KidSTAR Medical Education Program was founded in 2005 within the Division of Emergency Medicine of our Pediatrics Department. Our program's goals are: - To develop an active medical simulation program at Children's Memorial Hospital targeting a variety of learners. We view medical simulation as a valuable tool for education, particularly for critical incidents — rare, high-acuity events.
- To educate instructors to use effective, adult-learner oriented instructional strategies, both in the simulation setting and in general educational encounters.
- To conduct research into the effective use of simulation techniques in medical curricula.
We are an active program providing simulation-based training to physicians (residents, fellow, and faculty), nurses and advanced practice nurses, students (nursing and paramedics), and ancillary staff. Simulations occur in our dedicated 850 square-foot dedicated simulation center in our main hospital building as well as on the wards. We are partners in the broad Northwestern simulation community, working with STIL (the Simulation Technology and Immersive Learning) Program to develop simulation programs and co-develop course for the medical school faculty. We are active in research in simulation. Please see our collective bibliography. We offer simulation training in pediatric emergencies as well as coursework in advanced debriefing training and instructor development to the Children's and the larger Northwestern University community.
