My primary interest in pediatric liver disease and liver transplantation is the immune mechanism of neonatal liver disease, in particular gestational alloimmune liver disease (GALD) and biliary atresia. Through clinical research on outcomes in GALD and laboratory research on the mechanism of disease, our group has made a significant impact that has advanced the care of infants and mothers affected by GALD. I have a particular interest in urgent care/emergency medicine pediatric care as well as the education of residents and medical students.

My primary research interest involves neonatal neuroprotection. Neuroprotection with the application of therapeutic hypothermia in term and near-term infants with perinatal brain injury/neonatal encephalopathy, and neonatal stroke. I am the Site PI for Preterm Epo Neuroprotection Trial (PENUT Trial). A Multi-Center, Randomized Placebo-Controlled Phase III 940-subject Trial of Erythropoietin for the Neuroprotection of Extremely Low Gestational Age Neonates (ELGANs); 2013 - 2018.

I have an enduring interest in medical ethics, especially ethical issues in pediatrics, end-of-life care, research on human subjects, transplantation, children with differences of sex development (DSD) and gender identify nonconformity (GIN), medical and surgical innovation, transplantation and conscientious objection to requested care by health care professionals. As a hospital-based pediatrician, Dr. Wicks works at both Lurie Children's Hospital and Prentice Women's Hospital with clinical areas of focus including management of critically ill newborns in the Neonatal ICU. I am interested in Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) and alternative medicines. We have created a center called the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center that is devoted to taking care of patients with eczema and their families, with an emphasis on education about the disease. I am also very interested in connective tissue diseases such as lupus and dermatomyositis. I am a medical acupuncturist and am interested in alternative medical approaches to dermatologic diseases. Dr. Loretta Li is a pediatric oncologist with clinical expertise in hematologic malignancies, including leukemia and lymphoma. She has a particular interest in caring for patients with high-risk leukemia including those with relapsed or refractory disease.
