So many reasons! I learn best from experience so getting to see a wide variety of cases as well as rotating on every sub-specialty service was important to me. I knew I wanted to come home to Chicago and as soon as I met all the people on my interview day I knew Lurie was where I wanted to be! My co-residents, chiefs, and program directors are what make this program so awesome and coming to work everyday to work with friends makes the long hours more enjoyable.

I was excited about the breadth of opportunities available at Lurie, and Chicago was a great place for myself and my husband who was starting grad school. I love being here because of my wonderful co-residents who are so collaborative and fun. Our fellows and attendings are very helpful and interested in teaching and getting to know residents. The Uptown Clinic is also a wonderful community with amazing attendings and the best patients! And you can't beat the lake views out the hospital windows!

I wanted to go to a program where my co-residents would not only motivate me to be the best resident I can be, but also become lifelong friends who I love working with each day. My co-residents are intelligent, kind, and hilarious individuals. Not one day goes by without laughter, which is the key to a fruitful and fun residency!

Lurie became my top choice because the program's values very much aligned with my own. As a graduate with a distinction in Urban Health, I wanted a program located in a large city with a diverse patient population, integrity, advocacy initiatives, and a strong academic foundation. That said though, I ultimately chose Lurie because it was clear to me how much the residents all adore each other. The camaraderie here is unparalleled and I have felt incredibly supported by my co-residents as well as the leadership here. I am so thankful every day to be a part of the Lurie community; this program is infinitely better than anything I had envisioned for myself.

An obvious commitment to two crucial components of any program: resident learning and consistent respect for residents, co-workers as people. There are countless policies and initiatives here that demonstrate the importance of these two ideas to our leadership.

I had heard really great things about the Lurie Pediatric Residency Program from my medical school mentors, so I wanted to get a first-hand look at what it was all about! I did an away rotation here during my fourth year of medical school, and during those four weeks I fell in love with the program. I was blown away by the friendliness of all of the residents and faculty, the passion everyone shared for their job, the ability to incorporate so much stellar education into each day (beyond morning/noon conferences), and all of the testimonials about the emphasis of a healthy work-life balance, especially with so many program facilitated group bonding social events. I was also drawn to their focus on equity and inclusion, which is an important quality I was looking for in my residency program. On top of these great characteristics of the program, after my interview day, I went to say good-bye to one of the attendings I had been working with, and I saw her doing a handstand in front of a patient's room who had been unable to attend the floor yoga event that day - I knew right then and there, that these were the incredible attendings I wanted to have the privilege to work side by side with as I train to become the best pediatrician that I can be.
Now that I have been here for a few months, I can definitely attest to all of those qualities still ringing true, and have loved getting to know and work with my amazing intern class! Despite social gatherings being limited due to COVID, the program has done an excellent job organizing socially distanced events outside in parks and and finds safe ways to ensure we still receive all of our day to day education. The second and third year classes, and all of the faculty have also been very welcoming and excited to have us join the Lurie family, and I've loved getting to meet and work with so many of them so far!

I wanted a bigger city and bigger program so I could explore all the niches within Pediatrics but still feel the support/closeness you might expect more from a smaller program -- from the moment arriving to happy hour/my interview, it was clear Lurie residents love coming to work and seeing each other!
As an intern who's started off with a decent number of night shifts, the atmosphere of night teams in particular reflects this. From seniors jumping to other teams to help when many admissions come in at once, to holding pagers so everyone gets uninterrupted dinner time, to drooling over cooking shows when there's coveted downtime, to polling the room and discussing/learning from challenging cases, the culture of support here has made a bumpy transition to intern year during COVID times infinitely smoother!

Throughout my interview season, everyone told me to "trust your gut," because when a program is a right fit for you, you'll just know. When I came to Lurie, I immediately saw how much the residents enjoyed being around each other and I instantly felt welcomed. I had a wonderful interview day meeting with faculty members who are invested in resident education, and as I walked around Chicago afterwards, my gut told me that this was it: this was the program for me. And I'm so happy I listened to my gut! From weekly summer BBQ's to playing catchphrase while delirious on night shift, there's never been a dull moment since I've started. The opportunities are endless here, and if you come here, you'll find a huge support system that'll guide you through this tough but rewarding residency journey (:

There were so many reasons I made Lurie my #1. I felt so comfortable on my interview day here and I loved how respected the residents were. The environment at Lurie that I got to witness was one that really emphasized the importance of medical learning- on rounds, I saw how valued the residents, sub-I's, and medical students all were and the graduated autonomy that was given, with the senior resident being trusted with independently leading rounds; I attended two educational conferences, which had a higher faculty turn-out than I had seen at any other program's conferences; and the robust amount of fellowship programs here showed me that there would be a plethora of patients I could learn from by caring for them. In addition to that, it made me so happy to see that the residents were super excited to see one another and hang out all together at the post-interview happy hour, and that was a culture I wanted to be a part of. Finally, getting to live in Chicago - living right on the lake, walking everywhere (if you want to), eating incredible food, and all of the other perks that come with living in one of the largest cities - definitely sealed the deal.

I did an away at Lurie last year, and one thing that really stood out to me was the quality of conferences! The active participation by residents (and especially interns), the supportive atmosphere, and the number of faculty in attendance every day who were so eager to teach and act as resources really impressed me.
Favorite thing about Chicago?
The diversity of people, food, and activities!

I spent plenty of time at Lurie as a Northwestern med student, so I knew all about Lurie's warm, positive, friendly learning environment well before application season. Lurie's patient population offers both a huge breadth of pathology to learn about and the experts who are the best teachers! Also, the Lurie patient population is quite diverse, so we are able to care of patients of all backgrounds and address their psychosocial needs - this was super important to me when I was thinking about my rank list. All of the above is great, but my absolute favorite part of residency so far is my AMAZING co-residents! We are a fun bunch who love spending time together. I couldn't ask for a better crew to hang with in and outside of the hospital :)
